I've also gone back to 1.2.3 for this reason, but I'm using 3.2 from experimental (which should have the fix from https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8578).

How can we compile our own plugin dlls (like the ones included in the tarball at https://discussions.zoho.com/keefox/topic/keepassrpc-plgx-not-functioning-with-mono-3#71684000000166045)? It'd be nice to be on the latest and greatest 1.2.7.

Yeah I'm quite surprised that a fix for a regression has taken over 5 months to make it into a released build of Mono. I don't follow Mono development closely though so others might have more insight on this topic.

I suppose it's possible there is a new bug in 3.2. Can you try other plgx plugins to see if the problem is specific to KeeFox?

As for making your own compiled DLL, take a look here: https://github.com/luckyrat/KeeFox/wiki/en-|-Development#building-keefox

You'll only need to worry about getting the KeePassRPC project to build so don't worry if other parts of the solution fail for any reason (make sure to point the KeePass.exe reference to the same exe that you'll run with Mono).

I'm afraid I can only advise how to build in Windows. It's theoretically possible to do it in Linux but then again, theoretically Mono should be able to compile the plgx file so I won't be betting any money on that theory!

I appears that everyone is already aware that this is a known issue with Mono >= 3.0.0 and <= 3.0.10.

The issue with 3.2 is different. If you run KeePass with the --saveplgxcr option, I think you will get the same error as me.

1. error CS1705: Assembly `System, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' references `Mono.Security, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0738eb9f132ed756' which has a higher version number than imported assembly `Mono.Security, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0738eb9f132ed756'

This is the old Mono.Security needed for Windows but conflicts with Linux trick. @luckrat: I have an idea on how to fix this. You can expect a pull request if it works.

RE RE Line 258: Yes, this is the "proper" thing to do. Just sent a pull request.

RE RE Mono.Security: Not quite such an easy fix. The way plgx files parse and compile projects is kind of "dumb". I don't mean that as an insult, but just that it does virtually no checking of anything, so there is no way to do any kind of conditional compiling. I am hoping we can use the --plgx-build-pre: option to delete the Mono.Security.dll from the cache directory before it compiles. However, IIRC, Mono executes the pre-build event asynchronously, so you end up with a race condition of trying to delete the file before the compiling starts. We'll see.

@luckyrat: The issue with Mono 3.2.3 appears to be keefox specific. Other plugins work (tested KeePassHttp.pglx.

FYI, I just tried to install KeePass2 2.25, KeeFox 1.2.7, with Mono 3.2.8 under Gnome Ubuntu 14.04.

To get it to work required both the installation of "mono-complete" (their packaging doesn't have it as a dependency) and adding the .dll's from @d.lech's archive (see earlier post) into /usr/lib/keepass2/plugins instead of the original keepassRPC.plgx.

Note that adding just "mono-dmcs & libmono-system-management4.0-cil" rather than "mono-complete" (as mentioned in another thread) is not sufficient.

Given that 14.04 is going to be a LTS release of Ubuntu I suspect you may see a lot of people upgrading from 12.04LTS, and then complaining that they can't get KeeFox working when they hit the mono 3.2.x security problem for the first time...

There were some additional issues with Mono v3.2.x that were resolved with KeeFox v1.3.1 that was just released. KeeFox v1.2.7 is not expected to work with Mono v3.2.x.

Mono has also changed how they package their libraries since the post "mono-dmcs & libmono-system-management4.0-cil". I will have to do some research to figure out what the minimum requirements are.

I know it's not the ideal way of progressing this, but would it be possible to bung the dlls into the keefox extension, so you can say "Just copy the plgx file into your plugins, but if that doesn't work, try unpacking the DLLs in there instead"?

I'm not sure what benefit that really gives us.

Barring some bugs with older versions of Mono, KeeFox 1.3 works fine in plgx form so if we think the problems are widespread enough to add further information to the setup page instructions, I'd suggest something more along the lines of "if it doesn't work, upgrade Mono to a working version".

The DLLs would need to be built for each combination of KeeFox version and KeePass version so it is unlikely that we could make bundling them into the KeeFox XPI package work without a significant package size increase for all users.

OK, that makes sense.

Perhaps there's an alternative route here? Could we have the built DLLs for the combinations on a server somewhere? You could then say "If you're having issues with the PLGX file, you can get the combination from http://somehost.com/Keefox/1.2.7/ - you'll need to get the right file for your version of keepass, found by going to help -> about" (or similar).

This then means you're not exactly reliant on the forum (which, while it's useful, the fact you need to register to download files might discourage some users), and gives you a single place you can point to (which means no need to point to individual threads on the forum).

I'm happy to set up a location for that with dreamhost, or put it on github, or well, whatever you want to do, if you need me to. I'm no good at coding (in anything other than PHP), but I am more than happy to support this project, if there's something I can do to help... even if it's just to tide us over until we figure out how to work around this issue with Mono.

The problem is much bigger than just KeePassRPC. ALL plgx plugins will not compile correctly on Mono 3.0.x. Also, Mono 3.0.x is not supported by upstream (Xamarin). I think the best advice is to tell users of Mono 3.0.x upgrade, downgrade or patch.

The only 2 distros I know that use Mono 3.0.x are OpenSUSE (last couple releases) and Debian Jessie. Patching on Debian it turns out is quite easy: http://sourceforge.net/p/keepass/discussion/329221/thread/7bbdefaa/?limit=25#a700

I've just tested KeeFox 1.4.0b1 in Ubuntu 14.04 and it works fine. I can't think of anything significant that would have changed since KeeFox v1.3.1 but it shouldn't hurt to try the beta (from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/keefox/versions/ ).

This was with KeePass 2.23 (which has a rather glitchy UI but generally works and is a year old so I was not expecting perfection) and it might make a difference that this was an upgrade from 13.10 rather than a clean install but I didn't have to make any changes to Mono or adjust any configuration, it just worked.

Can you provide more details about exactly what you try and what error messages or log entries you see?

The patch is for mono v3.0.x only. The issue is fixed in mono 3.2.x which is included in ubuntu 14.04.

Due to a completely different issue, KeeFox/KeePassRPC less than version 1.3 will not work with mono 3.2.x

However, KeeFox/KeePassRPC v1.3 and 1.4 should work just fine in ubuntu 14.04

I'll start a new thread when I get home tonight about the issue I've got rather than muddying the waters here any more than I need to, especially as you're saying 14.04 with KeeFox 1.3 works (and it's not for me).
